New Member of the Scientific Advisory Board

08/16/2016 by Campion Fund

The Campion Fund is pleased to announce that Humphrey Hung-Chang Yao, PhD will join the Scientific Advisory Board on September 1, 2016. He presides over the Reproductive and Development Biology Group at National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Research Triangle Park, NC. His group focuses on the organogenesis of gonads and reproductive tracts in order to understand the basic processes of organ formation and the impact of environmental endocrine disruptors- chemicals that mimic the endocrine hormones- on these processes. Defects in reproductive organ formation can lead to severe birth defects, but minor and subtle abnormalities can become problems later in adulthood and lead to infertility or cancer. Dr. Yao seeks to understand sex-specific development of the embryos as well as how “progenitor cells” – precursor cells- develop into tissue specific cell types in the reproductive organs.
Dr. Yao received his PhD from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1999 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University in 2002. In 2003 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Comparative Biosciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and received tenure there in 2009. He joined NIEHS, NIH as a tenure-track investigator in 2010. He has been awarded many honors, including the Basil O’Connor Award, March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, Pfizer Research Award, the New Investigator Award from the Society for the Study of Reproduction and Young Andrologist Award from the American Society of Andrology.
